THANK YOU. I agree that Moffat’s Who does have its faults [nobody’s perfect], but he clearly doesn’t worship the Doctor in the way that RTD did. The Doctor shouldn’t be comparable to a religious figure. Yes, he’s awesome, but he’s not a god.
It’s incredibly frustrating to come back to your dashboard after a brief hiatus and not recognise half of the blogs that you apparently follow.
After the Doctor Who Christmas special, I’ve finally worked out why my love for the show has been waning.
For every episode since ‘Night Terrors’, the solution to the episode’s problem, or the way to defeat the enemy, has involved some sort need for a character to realise a certain emotion (in ‘Night Terrors’, the boy needed to realise that his parents still love him, in ‘The God Complex’, Amy has to lose her faith in the Doctor, in ‘The Girl Who Waited’, the Old Amy has to remember Rory’s love for her, in ‘Closing Time’, Craig has to use his fatherly love to reverse his Cyberman conversion, in ‘The Wedding of River Song’, the Doctor has to kiss River in order to save the Universe, and in ‘The Doctor, The Widow and the Wardrobe’, Madge has to remember home and her husband). It’s all just become too touchy-feely. Even in ‘Let’s Kill Hitler’, River had to quickly fall for the Doctor and give up a few regenerations for him.
I miss the days when the Doctor just came up with a brilliant idea just in the nick of time, whether it be creating some sort of contraption, breaking something or just tricking the aliens away.
You make some interesting points here, but I’m now learning that you and I see the Doctor from completely different perspectives. One of the biggest problems I had with the way RTD ran the show, was that he treated the Doctor as if he was some sort of god-like figure. While I admit that it’s great for his to zoom in and save the day every now and then, he can’t just rescue everybody all the time - people need to learn to rescue themselves. And he can help them do that.
The Doctor is a flawed creature. That’s why he surrounds himself with remarkable human beings [aside from Rose, of course - she’s hardly remarkable, which is probably why the Doctor had to fix everything all the time]. People like Amy and Rory help the Doctor realise his potential, but at the same time he helps them realise theirs. Doctor Who wouldn’t be any good if every time someone got into a spot of bother, all they had to do was call the Doctor, and he’d come along and point his sonic screwdriver at a computer and all of a sudden everything would be well again.
